Funchal Airport is unique in the fact that half of its runway is built on stilts and is out over the sea. This can look a little scary when coming into land. The reason the airport had the runway built on stilts was to increase tourism to the island but sadly when it was finished they realised that it was still too small for some of the bigger planes, this has now been rectified. The airport has good transport links around the island and it is recommended that you hire a car to explore the island fully.
