Guide to Driving in Malta

Car rental is favoured by many who visit Malta as it gives visitors the opportunity to escape from the beaten tourist track to delve into the island’s history and culture, adding a bit of individuality to their holiday.

To avoid travelling at high speeds to get to your destination, leave plenty of time for your journey. The maximum speed limit on open roads is 80 km/h (49 mph). In built up areas the speed limit is generally 50 km/h (31 mph), unless a different one is indicated. We also advise you to not use a mobile phone when driving as this is prohibited and you need to always make sure that you are wearing a seatbelt as these are compulsory, for both front and rear seated passengers.

  • Motor vehicles are required to stop to let passengers on and off buses

Fuel
Petrol Stations are open 7 days a week on a 24 hour basis and on Saturdays between 12 midnight and 8am and all day on Sunday the petrol stations operate on a self-service basis. Credit cards are not accepted.

Parking
Do not park where there are double yellow lines. When visiting certain localities in Malta and Gozo watch out for “Time Parking Zones”. These are zones where parking is limited to a one hour maximum. If any motoring or parking offence is committed for which a fine is payable then this will be required to be settled before departure.
